Major “Breakthrough” in Broadway Subway Construction

An Empty Plot Area With Concrete Layer

According to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, tunnel boring that began last fall has just broken through the future Mount Pleasant Station. It is estimated that the boring machines will take approximately one year to dig from the Great Northern Way – Emily Carr Station all the way to the future Arbutus Street Station.

“The Broadway Subway Project will extend the Millennium Line 5.7 kilometres from VCC-Clark Station to West Broadway and Arbutus Street, providing people with fast, convenient SkyTrain service along the Broadway corridor. The corridor is home to B.C.’s second-largest jobs centre, world-class health-care services, an emerging innovation and research hub, and growing residential communities.”

Once constructed, the new line is expected to reduce a trip from VCC-Clark to Arbutus to 11 minutes from the current half-hour and help greatly relieve congestion along Broadway.
